Got Fruit Trees?

January 26, 2011 by Charlie London

To further fulfill its mission of increasing the access
of healthy foods by underserved populations in
New Orleans, Hollygrove Market & Farm is pleased
to announce The New Orleans Fruit Tree Project.

This program will allow for city-wide harvesting of
local fruit trees and edible plants from community
space and private residential property. Harvested
produce will be donated to local food banks,
homeless shelters and families in need.

We are looking for tree owners across the city who
would be interested in registering fruit trees they
do not intend to harvest from their property. Trained
and supervised Hollygrove Market & Farm volunteers
would schedule a harvest date with tree owners and
deliver the harvested produce to Second Harvest Food
Bank. Tree owners and volunteers would be welcome
to a portion of whatever is collected.

Hollygrove Market & Farm is looking to increase
awareness of this new service and to help get fresh,
local produce to those who need it most (and before it
goes to waste!). We are very excited about this new
program and are looking forward to meeting tree owners
from across the city. I’ve included a flyer that can be
displayed or sent as an email. If you think this program
is something the residents of your neighborhood would
be interested in please pass on this information or feel
free to contact me with any questions or comments.
