Bastille Day will be commemorated on Saturday, July 9 with a block party in the 3100 block of Ponce de Leon Street in the city’s historic Faubourg St. John neighborhood, adjacent to Esplanade Avenue. This quiet, residential section of the city was once the home of many families of French Creole aristocracy. Most of the historic houses they lived in are still visible and in use today.
The Bastille Day party begins at 5 p.m., ends at 9 p.m., and features live music, food and drinks to toast the memorable occasion. This is a family-oriented event with fun things for the kids to do, including arts and crafts and games. The participation of all of the neighborhood’s stores and businesses is anticipated, including the grand opening of a new Maple Street Books branch store.
There will also be pétanque games going on during the Bastille Day celebration. Similar to the Italian bocce and English lawn bowling, pétanque is played by nearly 20 million people worldwide, 17 million in France alone.
Among the featured entertainers are vocalist Cindy Scott, guitarist/banjo player Don Vappie and their backup group, the Tupelo Honeys. Also on the bill are the High Ground Drifters, a New Orleans-based bluegrass band. Officials from the French Consulate Office in New Orleans are also expected to be on hand.
For more information visit the Bastille Day page on the Faubourg St. John Neighborhood Association website.
Additions to Bastille Day include: Gelato from la Divina, Solar Energy from South Coast Solar, Ari Zeiger’s kid stuff, Vegan Treats from Jodi Brown, Art by Jane Hill and Literature from Dennis Formento. And, there will be a sneak preview of the MAPLE STREET BOOKSTORE on Ponce deLeon scheduled to officially open in September.
