Parking Management

February 23, 2012 by Charlie London

The Urban Land Institute is hosting a free symposium on parking management featuring national expert Donald Shoup on Tuesday, March 13th. This event is free and open to the public if you register by Thursday, 3/8/12.

PARKING! Can We Do Better for Our Communities and Our Businesses?

A symposium on the true costs of parking & new strategies for making parking work. Featuring parking expert and innovator Donald Shoup, PhD

Accommodating the automobile requires a lot of parking. Providing all this parking has had a profound eect on our communities, literally reshaping them. Through parking requirements we have come to expect free or cheap parking at every destination.

However, parking is not free or cheap for any of us. The cost of providing this “free” parking is hidden in the costs of virtually every other good and service we buy – from a cup of coee to rent. We also experience costs in time spent ‘hunting’ for a space, tra‑c-lled neighborhoods, less walking, and a severe loss of tree canopy and green space.

Join ULI Louisiana as we learn about the effects of our current approach to parking and alternatives to managing parking that can help make our cities be better places to live.

Spotlight on Donald Shoup
from the Los Angeles Times

“World-regarded as an expert on parking policy, UCLA Urban Planning Professor Dr. Donald Shoup is the author of The High Cost of Free Parking, a publication so popular among scholars and devotees that he attracts groupies known as Shoupistas at book signings! Shoup has been hailed as the ‘prophet of parking,’ and the ‘Jane Jacobs of parking policy.’

According to Shoup, free parking is at the root of many urban ills: congestion, sprawl, wasteful energy use and air pollution. City governments contribute to all these ills, he says, by requiring too many parking spaces for all development. When street parking is free or inexpensive—as in many cities—demand exceeds supply, and people spend time and fuel cruising for scarce spaces. Cheap street parking thus increases congestion by encouraging people to drive rather than walk, pedal or take public transit.

Partial to khaki-colored suits and tattersall shirts, Shoup holds four degrees from Yale University, including a doctorate in economics. He has directed the Institute of Transportation Studies at UCLA and chaired the university’s urban planning department.”
