Annual Sunset Swim

May 4, 2012 by Charlie London

Rivers Gleason slept as his parents, Steve and Michel Gleason participated in the annual swim across Bayou St. John that takes place after the Thursday Jazz Fest.

An extraordinary evening — Steve Gleason with friends swam across Bayou St. John tonight! A Thursday night of jazz fest tradition for over a decade has been the sunset swim across Bayou St. John the Harding Drive bridge. While I’m not sure of his participation an earlier swims, I was witness to a singular expression of the human will to live life to its fullest. As Steve Gleason (in the pink swim), with the escort trusted friends, cast aside limitations that Lou Gehrig’s disease had unexpectedly brought him and swam across the Bayou tonight. The sun was already setting and Jimmy Buffett had closed out the day. While the pictures and video are dark the memory will always be a bright one for me..
