Book Signing January 16th

January 6, 2016 by Charlie London

by Robert Thompson

Neighborhood businesses offering special programming enrich our community by creating diverse and interesting activities within walking distance. For instance, Kitchen Witch at 1452 Broad hosts booksignings where new books and their authors are showcased, a great opportunity for those of us who appreciate the New Orleans literary scene!

thehuntOn Saturday Jan 16 from 2-4 pm, food and travel writer Beth D’Addono will be signing her new book, “The Hunt – New Orleans”.

Kitchen Witch | 1452 North Broad  |  New Orleans

If your interest is in this city and its lifestyle experiences then you may want to check out “The Hunt”, a travel guide in the series from Gatehouse Publishing that focuses on an eclectic mix of independently owned dining and shopping destinations.  D’Addono, who fell in love with New Orleans and started writing about the city in 1991, is now based in the Marigny and writes regularly about New Orleans for outlets including USAToday.com/10Best, Southbound, Country Roads, and AAA World.

“Kitchen Witch is one of the more than 40 independently owned businesses I feature in my book,” she said. “New Orleans isn’t about chain stores, and this wonderfully funky cook and book shop is one of my favorite spots. Its expanded new location has room for all kinds of treasures and there’s plenty of parking,” I hope she didn’t miss the fact its located next to the best neighborhood in the city in which to live!

Faubourg St. John neighbors Debbie Lindsey and Philipe LaMancusa opened their store at 1452 N. Broad, suite C, today (November 1, 2015). “Kitchen WItch Cookbooks” will undoubtedly become an asset to our area, as a unique and quirky bookshop run by two lovely people. Debbie is planning to be open 7 days a week, 10ish to 4ish and will feature book signings and related events.

It is in the little strip mall like building with the Boost Store and the Beauty Supply. Plenty of parking, but heck I can just walk there. We haven’t had a neighborhood hangout with the feel of special books since Maple Street left, and cooks will obviously find a wide selection of cookbooks. I love the esoteric treasures hanging around, and there’s also vinyl records for music lovers. The place is still settling in, creative chaos I’d call it, but I was so excited to visit I couldn’t wait longer. Hope this appeals to our membership and we can support still another great Faubourg St. John business.

Kitchen Witch Cookbooks is a small book shop at 1452 North Broad in New Orleans. They specialize in rare, hard to find, out of print and pre-owned books on food and cooking. This is a fully functional independent book store and not just a website location. You will always find Debbie or Philipe at the shop ready to answer questions, share secrets, relay gossip, political opinions and give you directions to the hottest spots to eat. The shop’s phone number is 504-528-8382 and they’ll gladly take and execute telephone purchases.

They will happily ship your purchases, and all out of state shippings save the 9% taxes that we must extract from in-shop clients. They do ship ‘Media Mail’ and that takes seven to ten days from time of departure.

Debbie Lindsey and Philipe LaMancusa (the two person operating team) look forward to your visit, either in person or by phone/email/spirit/carrier pigeon. They are full of advice on dining and other visitor concerns and are very friendly. In fact, let them know when your birthday is and they will send you a card!

Le Marche des Fetes Tres Bon

November 21, 2015 by Charlie London

On Saturday, December 5th from 10am-4pm, visitors enjoyed shopping with over 30 artist vendors for one-of-a-kind handmade art and accessories and Mignon Faget jewelry, they met Papa Noël, enjoyed live music, purchased great books autographed by their favorite New Orleans authors, and munched on tasty local and exotic treats. The creole colonial-style Pitot House was decorated in the traditional style for Christmas and was open for tours.

IMG_2851

A New Orleans-themed Little Free Library has been donated to New Orleans by littlefreelibrary.org.

Anyone who wants it should write a one page letter (500 words maximum) explaining “Why I want a Little Free Library and what it would do for my neighborhood.”  Please include your name, address, phone number, and email address at the top of your letter.

By May 31, email the letter to [email protected] and a panel of judges will select the winning letter.  The library must be located in New Orleans, and installation on private property is recommended.

You may remember that Faubourg St. John received a Little Free Library on Desoto Street in 2012 courtesy of Missy & Bill Dalton. Learn more in the link: https://fsjna.org/2012/06/desoto-street-library/

The Mayor’s Neighborhood Engagement Office Invite Residents to
Join NORDC Community Advisory Teams

The New Orleans Recreation Development Commission (NORDC) is actively seeking residents to join the NORDC Neighborhood Participation Process (NPP).

The NORDC NPP creates 15 location-based Community Advisory Teams (CAT), three per a council district. Team meetings allow citizens to come together to discuss and prioritize what gets recommended to NORDC on an ongoing basis.

CAT membership is a 12 month commitment with an opportunity for residents to work with NORDC staff, neighbors and commissioners on recommended recreation improvements that will ensure the communities concerns are a top priority.

If you are a parent, member of a booster club or community group, we encourage you to participate.

The application deadline is November 13, 2013 followed by a new member orientation on November 16, 2013. Orientation will take place at 10:30am in the UNO Lindy C. Boggs International Conference Center at 2045 Lakeshore Drive.

Linda and Lee Prout and their wonderful Boy Scout crew erect the post for the Little Free Library

Please visit below to learn more about the “Little Free Library” program.

http://www.littlefreelibrary.org/index.html

Back in early March, Bill & Melissa Dalton took action after reading a message on the Faubourg St. John yahoo group about the Little Free Library program and an opportunity to win one.
Bill says:
My wife put together the one page flyer/letter above. Well, this gave us our prize. And even though we were told we won back in mid April, the box was to be constructed by the original maker of the “Little Free Library” up in Madison Wisconsin. Due to regional interest in the program, our library was help for multiple appearances and interviews.

Anyway, IN THE MEAN TIME, due to the interest, the organizer of the contest (and Algiers’ first little free librarian, Linda Prout) applied for a grant from the mayors office. This grant was awarded and allowed a church on the west bank to construct 12 other boxes. Linda and Lee Prout then recruited boy scouts to go around town last week to dig the post holes and cement in the posts.

All this lead up to this weekend when 13 little free libraries popped up across the city!!!

Each one has a small wood plaque engraved with the number of the library. Ours is number 1759.

Missy (my wife) has started a facebook page http://www.facebook.com/DeSotoStLittleLibrary and she hopes to post updates here and there to either call for donations or announce when large batches of new content is on the shelf.
