Two of our neighbors, Dan E. and Shawna S. have undertaken a small but superior cafe within walking distance of our neighborhood.

Pagoda Cafe, at the corner of North Dorgenois and Bayou Road, has preserved and revitalized an old neighborhood curiosity – the Chinese Laundry and created a space for sandwiches and salads with some local specialties. These talented two have combined forces to revitalize the little shopping district with their venture, and should bring responsible business practices and healthy food to the area.

One of the awesome offerings is Terranova’s sausage served in a puff pastry. It is worth the trip from anywhere.

It’s a win every time a local business offers alternatives to corporate chains, and I think this is another neighborhood shop that offers us one more option of staying local.

FROM EATER NOLA: Seventh Ward: Pagoda Café | 1443 N. Dorgenois | Ian McNulty reports that Tulane architecture professor Dan Etheridge and business partner Shana Sassoon “are developing the space as a counter service breakfast and lunch joint with an espresso bar. All seating will be outside on new covered decks extending from the historic building” that’s only 300 square feet and has a pretty rad pagoda roof.

IAN McNULTY WROTE ABOUT PAGODA in his October 30, 2013 article…

As the restaurant boom has rolled on, buildings of all description have been converted into new eateries and the dining concepts have grown ever more particular and specific. But even after all we’ve seen lately, two very new, casual additions have managed to turn heads right out of the gate.

One is Pagoda Café (1403 N. Dorgenois St., 504-644-4178; pagodacafe.net), which opened last week in a tiny building along Bayou Road that does indeed look like a pagoda. It was originally built in the 1930s as part of a string of Chinese laundries, though it had sat empty for years as a neglected, idiosyncratic outpost in the Seventh Ward before Tulane University architecture professor Dan Etheridge and business partner Shana Sassoon redeveloped it. They serve a short menu of breakfast tacos, salads and grilled sandwiches (one with Serrano ham, manchego and arugula pesto on Bellegarde Bakery ciabatta hit the spot), and the café doubles as an espresso bar…

St. Patrick’s Day is this Sunday. Start celebrating the day right by enjoying a great brunch at one of the great restaurants right here in Faubourg St. John! Forget that cereal, go get a real breakfast at a real restaurant in Faubourg St. John. It’s magicly delicious!

Breakfast sandwiches like this and full breakfast meals are prepared daily at Canseco’s. Get there early for the best selection! Canseco’s opens at 7 a.m.
Everyday, one can buy a variety of quick breakfast options that are ready to go at Canseco’s Market. Pictured here is the ham, egg and cheese biscuit but grits, eggs and sausage are also available in full meals that are hot and pre-packaged ready to go.

And, at Fair Grinds there is all manner of fair trade coffee with a variety of ready to eat muffins waiting to be heated up for you.

But, the pièce de résistance for breakfast in Faubourg St. John is only available on Sundays. Both Cafe Degas and Santa Fe restaurants offer a Sunday brunch that should not be missed.

This meal, featuring home made biscuits, meat from Terranova’s all wonderfully prepared is only available from Santa Fe and only on Sundays!

Breakfast Anyone?

December 2, 2012 by Charlie London

Some neighbors have lamented that there isn’t a business dedicated to serving breakfast in Faubourg St. John. However, there are breakfast options available on a daily basis and on Sunday two options for brunch that should not be missed.

Back Away from the Drive-Thru

September 24, 2011 by Charlie London

Those drive-thru places offer quick food but at what cost? Your health, your sanity?

Everyone knows that stuff isn’t good for you and barking your order through a speaker can’t be good for for your mental health. Oh, but the price is cheap and it’s quick.

Consider this, you can have food prepared by a chef for the same or less cost in an environment that will relax your mind and regenerate your spirit. And, you’ll be helping a non-profit that helps others.

Where is this place you ask? At 422 1/2 South Broad. It’s called Liberty’s Kitchen and is a NON-profit restaurant that provides jobs for at-risk youth. The food is prepared by Chef Reggie Davis and the price is right.

The downside? You have to go in and sit down. You get your food prepared and served by people who actually care about what you are eating, and you might spend a total of thirty minutes enjoying your meal. (more if you partake of the free wireless internet)

So, back away from the drive-thru and head on over to Liberty’s Kitchen at 422 South Broad near Tulane Avenue. Your physical and mental health will thank you.

Click here to listen to what Ian McNulty has to say about Liberty’s Kitchen.

Liberty’s Kitchen Café and Coffee House – A Product with a Purpose

The retail establishment at 422½ South Broad offers an espresso bar serving Starbucks® coffee and espresso beverages as well as a full service kitchen serving breakfast and lunch – all giving the students an opportunity to learn basic barista and culinary skills in a real life setting. Everything at Liberty’s Kitchen is made “from scratch” – from the pastries to salad dressings to soups and stocks. Not only does this give customers a quality dining experience, but Chef Reggie Davis has designed the menu with an eye for training opportunities.
