GIVE 50 DOLLARS AND A KID GETS A BICYCLE FOR CHRISTMAS

October 24, 2017 by Charlie London

The New Orleans Police Department’s First District is asking for donations of $50 to purchase bicycles for the Pre-K, Kindergarten and 1st grade students at Phyllis Wheatley Community School.

This is the 5th year N.O.P.D.’s First District is giving bikes to school kids. A different school is chosen each year. This year, the bikes will go to students at Phyllis Wheatley Community School at 2300 Dumaine Street.

Most of the students at Phyllis Wheatley are very needy (but not all). The School Resource Officer got a head count of the Pre-K, Kindergarten and First Graders; approximately 200 students need bicycles.

Blank check with false numbers in a blue tone.

If you have any questions or would like to donate a check for 50 dollars, please do not hesitate to call Detective Kenneth Gill at (504) 658-6398 or email Detective Gill at [email protected]

***
hill-domeInformation obtained from the book, “Story of The Building of a Parish Church, Our Lady of the Holy Rosary, New Orleans, With Descriptions of Statuary, Windows, Apsidal Decoration”

by Bishop Louis Abel Caillouet, Former Auxiliary Bishop of New Orleans.

By Authentic Act before Felix Joseph Puig, Notary Public, dated April 11, 1905, Mrs. Sylvanie Blanc, widow of James D. Denegre, donated to The Society of the Roman Catholic Church of the Diocese of New Orleans, her residence and property which extended from Esplanade Street to Bayou St. John. The donation was accepted for The Society of the Roman Catholic Church of the Diocese of New Orleans by Archbishop Placide Louis Chapelle.

The Act of Donation states that Mrs. Denegre was making this donation: …

“In pursuance of the cherished wish of her mother, the late Mrs. Marie Fannie

Labatut Blanc, widow of Evariste Blanc, who desired that the property…should

Become the site of a Parish Church for the purpose of providing the residents in

the neighborhood of Bayou St. John and Esplanade Street with a Parish Church.”

By way of reiterating the purpose intended by the donor’s mother, there is set forth the express condition that there shall be erected on the property, and perpetually maintained, Parish Church. The text continues:

“and necessary accessories and dependencies, such as parsonage, school, or other

purposes connected with a Parish Church, and shall remain forever dedicated to such

use and no other; and upon the further condition that one mass shall be forever

celebrated in said Church during each and every month after the same shall have been

constructed, viz, six of said masses to be for the living and six for the dead members of

said donor’s family, and an additional mass for herself, the donor, annually on the

eleventh day of April, the anniversary of this donation, and upon the further condition

that said contemplated Parish Church shall be dedicated to the Blessed Virgin and called

the Church of “SAINTE MARIE DU ROSAIRE.’”…

Reverend William J. Vincent was appointed Pastor of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary on October 19, 1907. On December 25, 1907, the first Mass held at Our Lady of the Holy Rosary was said by Archbishop James Hubert Blenk. On January 1, 1908, Father Vincent offered the first Mass in the new frame church.

In September 1908, a parish school was opened. As there was no school building available, much of the space in the Rectory was used for classrooms. School growth led to the construction of a two-story frame building in 1913.

On April 19, 1910, the Congregation of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary of the Roman Catholic Church was incorporated. On July 31, 1913, Archbishop James H. Blenk transferred title to the property until then held in the name of the diocesan corporation, to the parish corporation.

On October 24, 1922, Very Reverend Canon Racine wrote Archbishop Shaw that the building committee had examined and approved the revised plans for the Church of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary. Archbishop Shaw granted Father Vincent authorization to proceed with the building of the Church of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary.

Within 12 months, from March 1924 to March 1925, Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church was practically completed exteriorly from groundbreaking to the cross surmounting the dome. Interior finishing, including furnishings, took longer. The highly ornate marble altar was ready and installed for the dedication of the new church by Archbishop Shaw on November 22, 1925. It was a gift of Captain John L. Vincent, father of Pastor William J. Vincent. The altar was consecrated December 6, 1925, by Bishop Jeanmard of Lafayette.

The 2000 pound bell donated by Mrs. Denegre was raised to its permanent location in the brick campanile forming the right rear corner of the church edifice on April 19, 1912. The new organ was installed in 1929. The pulpit, carved from a single block of white marble resting on a separate marble base, was under contract in 1929. The Main Altar was consecrated December 6, 1925.

MAKE YOUR TAX DEDUCTIBLE GIFT WORK FOR YOU

December 18, 2015 by Charlie London

The Faubourg St. John Neighborhood Association is a 501c3 non-profit. Tax i.d. number… 74-2633439

So, money donated to FSJNA is tax deductible. FSJNA is raising funds to make Desmare Playground a better place for children and adults.

Make your money work for you and your neighborhood. Donate today!

FSJNA has $35,000 raised for Desmare Playground as of January 1, 2016

Let’s work together to make Desmare Playground a better place for everyone. Donate today!

RAISING FUNDS FOR DESMARE PLAYGROUND

The people of Faubourg St. John are always thinking of the neighborhood’s open spaces. From the Bayou to the bridges to the beautiful small parks that connect us, we proudly take a pro-active response to ownership and maintenance of these spaces. The people of Faubourg St. John want to be responsive to the needs of the neighborhood and our growing population of young families; refurbishing Desmare Playground at 3456 Esplanade is the current goal. It can’t be done without your generous support.

The goal of the Faubourg St. John Neighborhood Association (FSJNA) is to revamp the currently worn down playground and make it a more welcoming place for children with the addition of a swing-set (who ever heard of a playground with out swings?) along with a complete replacement of the playground equipment for children, refocusing the basketball court to be “little kid” friendly and re-purposing the space outside of the play equipment and ball field for family wellness as well as “kid-centric” neighborhood events. Bottom line, we want this playground to be a special place for children.

desmare-kids4webWorking with Landscape Architect Dana Brown & Associates (DBA) on the master plan, the Faubourg St. John Neighborhood Association involved the community in the playground planning process. On January 26, 2013 Desmare Playground held a kid’s charrette where neighborhood residents were invited out, with their children to have a chance to draw and express what they would like to see in the new playground redesign.

The event was a success with a number of families showing up and showcasing their creativity. With white boxes and sidewalk chalk the kids drew their playground ideas. These ideas ranged from swing sets to duck ponds. Especially swings!Desmare-depiction1

The new master plan was developed from the charrette input and keeps it simple providing a maximum play experience for the kids but with an eye towards easy maintenance, sustainability in design and solves the storm water management issues with a rain garden. The new features are extraordinary: Swings, new play structures for different age groups, a new exercise station for adults, more integrated circulation, overhead canopy, a new entry with benches and plantings, a tricycle track for younger kids to cycle around, a water fountain that is dog friendly, waste receptacles and a new bleacher area for the adjacent school softball fields. All new design features in the park are ADA accessible, including the aggregate paths.

The phases of development for the new Desmare Playground are designed to be implemented as the Faubourg St. John Neighborhood Association raises funds. Each phase of development can be constructed in pieces or as a whole.

Fund raising is the hard part; we have already raised funds and paid for the design work. Our plans are approved by the City of New Orleans. The thermometer below shows where we are so far. The first goal is to get those swings in!

Each One Save One

Party at a ‘Mentor Magic’ Mixer for Each One Save One

mentor-magicThe Mentor Magic Gala is a huge fundraising gala that celebrates Each One Save One, a nonprofit that pairs caring adults as mentors with at-risk youth. The gala is a blast, but it’s also very fancy and a little expensive. The gang at Each One Save One didn’t want anyone to miss out on the fun, so this year they’re hosting a totally free mixer for young professionals who want to learn about their mission.

They’re hosting the party on Thursday, January 8 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Mizado Cocina (5080 Pontchartrain Blvd.) and they’re throwing in complimentary appetizers and a guacamole station because they love y’all so much. People are invited to come, learn about Each One Save One’s awesome programs (and how you can get involved), and have a drink and some guac. What could be better than that?

At the event you can also learn how to attend (or volunteer at) the 20th anniversary Magic Mentor Gala, which will be honoring ABC’s Robin Roberts this year. This article does a great job summing up everything about Each One Save One and this year’s gala, so read up, stop by, and find out for yourself what an awesome organization this is. No need to sign up, just swing by on the 8th. We’ll see you there!

Dear neighbors and Re-Bridge enthusiasts,

What follows is a long-overdue update about our efforts to rehabilitate the Dumaine Street and Magnolia bridges. Although I have not sent out an email recently, much work has been going on, and our progress is on track!

As a preface, I want to emphasize my great appreciation for the amazing support that has been offered and maintained, and without which this project would have died a long time ago:

~ The core group of Re-Bridge worker-bees that stays the course and gets it all done!

~ The Regional Planning Commission, who welcomed our initial proposals, contributed money and expertise, and continues to guide the project through a seemingly bewildering landscape!

~ Councilmember Susan Guidry, who has supported this project from the very beginning and continues to facilitate necessary conversations and collaborations!

~ The Faubourg St. John Neighborhood Association, who encouraged the project to launch, provided initial seed money, and has been there to help, support, contribute, attend, participate, and advocate in whatever manner is needed!

Magnolia Bridge

Feasibility Study (completed) $10,000 Funded by the Regional Planning Commission (RPC)

Completed by Volkert, Inc in 2011. This study informed the application for Federal Transportation Enhancement Funds (TE), and in November, 2011 $844,400 was awarded for this project.

Environmental & Historical Analyses (current phase) $67,000 Funded by RPC, to which Re-Bridge has contributed $13,400 in matching funds.

Completed by Volkert and forwarded to State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) for review in July. SHPO considers the impact of proposed work from an historic and archeological perspective and their review and approval is required prior to being able to spend any federal money on a project. A response from SHPO is expected soon, after which all documents will be forwarded to the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) for approval.

Engineering Design and Permitting (next phase) estimated at $200,000. TE funds cannot be used for this phase.

We have asked the City of New Orleans to provide funding for this phase, and we are awaiting final confirmation that money from an upcoming bond sale will be earmarked as such.

Construction (final phase) estimated at $888,750. The $844K in TE funds will be applied to this phase, leaving a match requirement estimated at $44,450.

The match dollars can be provided from any source: Re-Bridge, the City, or grant funding (as yet unidentified).

Dumaine Street Bridge

Re-Bridge contributed an engineering inspection (thanks to Jim Danner!) in 2011, which concluded that no structural damage exists.

The Department of Public Works inspects every bridge in the City every two years, and they have agreed to use the upcoming inspection of Dumaine to generate a scope of work and budget for beautification.

With a reliable estimate of cost, and once we understand what portions of the scope require professional v. volunteer services, Re-Bridge will pursue a Cooperative Endeavor Agreement (CEA) with the City of New Orleans. This CEA will allow Re-Bridge funding to fulfill a City-approved scope of work for cosmetic repairs and beautification.

Re-Bridge needs and welcomes community support! If you have some time, resources, money, or talent that you would like to contribute to the cause, please email me directly.

Many thanks to all of you,
Mary-jo Webster, Re-Bridge Chair
