FUN IN FAUBOURG ST. JOHN
article by Roberta Grove
The Faubourg St. John Neighborhood Association recently hosted its third annual Porch Crawl fundraiser. Broad Street, Orleans Avenue, Carrollton Avenue and Onzaga Street at the Fair Grounds are the boundaries for the historic neighborhood, which was established in 1708.

The area’s lush tree-lined streets are home to more than 4,000 residents who are accustomed to hosting unique celebrations.

The recent Porch Crawl highlighted seven Faubourg St. John homes and their front porches.

Each home was paired with one of seven neighborhood restaurants. At each stop along the way, patrons sampled tastings from each establishment while sipping refreshing summer cocktails, provided by Glazer’s.

Before air conditioning existed, New Orleans neighborhood porches were popular gathering places for friends, family and neighbors to socialize, with relative comfort, during the warmer summer months.

Today, many porches still have furnishings and fans to make outdoor entertaining more enjoyable.

It is this local tradition that inspired the members of the Faubourg St. John neighborhood to embrace history while simultaneously raising funds to support FSJNA’s many community improvements.

Supporting that cause were Liuzzas by the Track, Pal’s Lounge, Fat Falafel Food Truck, Serendipity, Café Degas, Santa Fe Restaurant, Lola’s and Ralph’s on the Park.

Some locations featured entertainment, but most patrons eventually found their way over to 1100 block of North Gayoso Street to take in the sounds of jazz trumpeter James Andrews and his trio.

FSJNA’s Porch Crawl attracted more than 150 patrons to highlight one of our city’s most-beautiful neighborhoods.

The Crawl is the perfect way to get a feel for and appreciation of a great neighborhood so if you missed it, make sure to check out https://fsjna.org for the organization’s next party. Bastille Day is just around the corner, with a celebration planned July 13. See you there!

Glazer’s strong commitment to the community has been recognized since our founding in 1933. It’s our way of saying “thank you” for allowing us to be your neighbor. Each day, we strive to earn, build and maintain a positive relationship of trust in the community, creating a tradition of caring that has come to be known as “Glazer’s Community Partnerships.”

New Orleans native Poppy Tooker will be signing: Mme. Bégué’s Recipes of Old New Orleans Creole Cookery.Wine selections are donated by Cork & Bottle Fine Wines, located in the American Can Company on Orleans Ave.

From bestofneworleans.com…
“Slow food advocate and author Poppy Tooker revives the work of one of New Orleans’ first famous chefs in Mme. Begue’s Recipes of Old New Orleans Creole Cookery (Pelican). The cookbook was first published in 1900 and has been out of print since 1937. Tooker’s new edition sheds light on the legendary Madame Begue and makes her recipes more accessible to contemporary home cooks.

Madame Begue came to New Orleans in 1853 as Elizabeth Kettenring. She opened Dutrey’s coffee shop in 1863 with her first husband Louis Dutreuil, a French Market butcher. When Dutreuil died, she married bartender Hippolyte Begue, and they renamed the French Quarter restaurant Begue’s. The restaurant’s popularity and her fame rose dramatically during the 1884 Cotton Exhibition, which brought an influx of tourists to New Orleans.

“At that time she became the No. 1 tourist attraction in this city,” Tooker says. “[Visitors] could actually see her in her kitchen at her coal-burning stove surrounded by her copper pots.”

Begue’s served an elaborate “second breakfast,” which evolved into New Orleans’ brunch tradition. The menu included classic dishes such as shrimp jambalaya, crawfish bisque and Creole gumbo. In the book, Tooker’s updated recipes appear alongside Begue’s original recipes.

Tooker says Begue’s recipes are “some of the purest records of the original Creole cuisine that put New Orleans on the map.” — BRAD RHINES”

Still Crazy After All These Years

October 31, 2011 by Charlie London

Article, photos, and video by Charlie London

Voodoo on the Bayou is 22 years old this year. It’s the original Voodoo on the Bayou not that head-banger one.

Check out the slideshow above and you’ll see photos of your neighbors enjoying the sounds of Los Po-Boy-Citos, the best latin band in New Orleans!

How ’bout this great stage built by Keith Christopher? Keith does all the great design for the party and has outdone himself year after year. And, the cost? zip, nada, zero. Why? Because Keith Christopher knows the value of service to one’s community.

If you could not make the 22nd annual Voodoo on the Bayou at the Pitot House this year you really missed a good one. But, its not too late to help out!

Please click here to make your tax deductible donation to the Faubourg St. John Neighborhood Association and its many benevolent programs. Just click on the “donate or pay dues here” box.
