Let Technology Lower Your Energy Bill

July 30, 2015 by Charlie London

Technologies That Can Change Your Energy Life

lightbulb_dollar_signYou want to save energy and live more sustainably, but that can take a lot of time and you’re busy. No worries. Researchers have been hard at work developing new gadgets that make it easy to conserve. Install these devices in your home and all you have to do is sit back and enjoy the savings.

Next generation thermostats

Programmable thermostats are the most cost-effective way to reduce your energy costs, but they can be complicated to use. Innovative new models are available to help optimize savings on your heating and cooling bills, while making adjusting temperatures easier and more convenient.

  • The Nest programs itself and continually adapts to your changing needs. It automatically creates a personalized schedule to optimize energy efficiency and fit your lifestyle.
  • The Ecobee WiFi thermostat includes a touchscreen interface and remote sensors. The sensors continually monitor each room and the thermostat adjusts temperatures whenever someone arrives or leaves.

Advanced power strips

Many electronic devices in your home—TV, game console, microwave oven—continue to draw power even when they’re turned off. This is known as phantom load, which costs the average household $100 a year, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. Once, the only way to stop phantom load was to unplug each device, which isn’t very convenient. Now, advanced power strips make saving energy a snap.

Advanced power strips don’t look all that different, but they include some very smart energy-saving capabilities. Plug devices into ‘controllable’ outlets and they will automatically switch off when they are not being used. Constant or ‘hot’ outlets are available for equipment that must remain on.

Some advanced models come with additional features that add more convenience. Occupancy sensors and timers shut off power when nobody’s around, or according to a set schedule. Current sensing units shut off equipment when it detects a drop in power, like when your computer goes into sleep mode.

Smart appliances

Companies such as GE, Whirlpool and LG are developing WiFi enabled smart appliances that are designed to streamline everyday tasks and keep you connected to your home wherever you are. From your mobile device you can do cool things like:

  • Preheat your oven while you are still at the grocery store.
  • Get an alert if your refrigerator door has been left open.
  • Stay updated on how much time is left on laundry wash or dry cycles.

These and other slick new devices are available to make your life simpler, smarter and cheaper. As technology continues to advance, who knows what you’ll be able to accomplish tomorrow.

Mary Cunningham Gets Things Done

July 18, 2012 by Charlie London

Faubourg St. John neighbor Richard Angelico contacted Mary Cunningham who works in Councilmember Palmer’s office (District C) about a limb hit by an 18 wheeler on Grand Route St John, directly across the street from 3229 Grand Route Saint John. Mr. Angelico said the limb was dangling dangerously and mixed up in electric wires. Ms. Cunningham immediately took action. She contacted Parks and Parkways, Entergy and the N.O.P.D. to help.

Within minutes, yes I said minutes, vehicles from Entergy and Parks and Parkways arrived on the scene to remove the dangerous limb.

Many thanks to Ms. Cunningham for her quick action on this dangerous situation!

Give Ms. Cunningham a call at 504.658.1030 to let her know Faubourg St. John is truly grateful for wonderful folks like her!

PARKS and PARKWAYS
The Department of Parks and Parkways is responsible for the maintenance of city trees. These are the trees on public property such as neutral grounds, parks and those trees between the sidewalk and the street. The Department responds to requests for tree removal, tree trimming and stump removal. The Department places primary importance on the issues of public safety and prioritizes its work accordingly. Citizens have the option of hiring an arborist and paying to have work done to a city tree in front of their property. This work must be done by a Louisiana licensed and insured arborist and requires a written permit from the Department of Parks and Parkways. The arborist must obtain the free permit. A non-comprehensive list of qualified arborists is available. Stumps may be removed without a permit but should be done only by a licensed contractor with insurance to protect the homeowner in case of accidents. The Department of Public Works has determined that the repair of sidewalks is the respnsiblity of the adjacent property owner. You may contact them at (504) 658-8000. A sidewalk bridging detail, (download here), is available which will allow the citizen to repair the sidewalk while accommodating the roots of the tree and minimizing the need for future repairs. Contact us for more information, to report a city tree problem, or to request pruning or removal.

ENTERGY
Entergy is committed to maintaining its infrastructure in a manner that helps ensure the safety of its employees, customers, and community. Part of that commitment is trimming or removing trees that are too close to the power lines and may be likely to cause power outages or create a safety hazard.

Free Trees for Arbor Day

November 4, 2011 by Charlie London

Entergy Corp. is providing 10,000 free trees to its customers in Louisiana, Mississippi, Arkansas and Texas to help them save energy.
The trees, offered on a first-come, first-serve basis, are part of the Arbor Day Foundation’s Energy-Saving Trees program which hopes to conserve energy through strategic tree planting. The foundation says trees provide shade and thus helps lower utility bills.

The trees can be reserved using an online tool —http://www.entergy.com/arborday — that estimates the amount of energy each tree will save in different locations.

Some types of trees available include sourwood, bald cypress, red maple and crape myrtle.
