LA VIE DE VILLE: Celebrating the spirits at ‘Voodoo on the Bayou’

By Roberta Grove

For the past 24 years, the Faubourg St. John Neighborhood Association has produced one of its signature events, Voodoo on the Bayou.

The party was staged on the grounds of the historic Pitot House on the banks of scenic Bayou St. John.

Last weekend, the site was transformed to accommodate the anticipated 400-plus costumed supporters of one of the city’s oldest neighborhoods. Nearly two dozen local restaurants were charged with the task of feeding the revelers and not one, but two bands were on tap to entertain.

First up on the stage was the group Lips and the Trips who warmed up the crowd, followed by Johnny Sketch and the Dirty Notes who closed the night out.

The mostly local crowd embraced the night’s theme with a colorful costume display that reflected the artistic flair that is characteristic of Faubourg St. John residents. In fact, much of the artwork up for bids in the silent auction was provided by artists who live and work within the neighborhood.

“We’re hoping to generate between $6,000 to $8,000 from tonight’s event,” said FSJNA’s President Michael Cohn. “Much of the proceeds will be dedicated towards improving and maintaining the quality of life for the residents of Faubourg St. John.” Specifically, improvements to the Desmare Playground on Esplanade Avenue, the Dumaine Street Bridge and the historic Magnolia Footbridge are all projects that will share in the revenue generated from this fundraising effort.

Faubourg St. John was established as a neighborhood in 1708. Today, more than 4,000 residents call it home. Within the 75-block area that defines the area, you’ll discover a diverse selection of New Orleans restaurants, historic architecture, abundant green space, and an easy pace to enjoy local culture.

If you missed Voodoo on the Bayou this year, make sure to plan to experience it next year. For more information on the Faubourg St. John neighborhood and all of the wonderful events that the association produces throughout the year, visit www.fsjna.org.

Wishing you a happy and safe Halloween!

VOODOO ON THE BAYOU

by Tom Fitzmorris

Long before the Voodoo Festival in City Park took over the Halloween weekend (as it will this weekend), the Faubourg St John Neighborhood Association held its annual fundraising party–also Halloween weekend, also with a voodoo theme, also near City Park. Instead of loud music, however, the theme is food. (Although there’s music, too.) The location is right: The Pitot House, one of the city’s oldest houses, on Bayou St. John in the bend across from City Park. It was the home of James Pitot, the first mayor of New Orleans.

The party starts at eight-thirty tonight (Saturday, October 27) and goes until midnight, with all the essential makings of a fun evening: live music, open bar, and food. What food? From these esteemed culinarians, most of which are from the neighborhood:

Café Degas
Santa Fe
Lola’s
Serendipity
Katie’s
Fellini’s Café
Commander’s Palace
Deutsches Haus
Fairgrounds
Fairgrinds
Aunt Sally’s
Terranova’s
Redemption
Little Tokyo

The tickets are available in advance for $50 online (https://fsjna.org) or at these merchants:

Terranova Supermarket, 3308 Esplanade Ave
Swirl Wine, 3143 Ponce de Leon
Cork & Bottle, 3700 Orleans Avenue

Tickets are also at the door for $60. The money goes toward the continuing improvement of that historic neighborhood and the Pitot House itself, which is a real gem. Its projects include the ReBridge Project, Desmare Playground, and the Bayou Children’s Halloween event.

Still Crazy After All These Years

October 31, 2011 by Charlie London

Article, photos, and video by Charlie London

Voodoo on the Bayou is 22 years old this year. It’s the original Voodoo on the Bayou not that head-banger one.

Check out the slideshow above and you’ll see photos of your neighbors enjoying the sounds of Los Po-Boy-Citos, the best latin band in New Orleans!

How ’bout this great stage built by Keith Christopher? Keith does all the great design for the party and has outdone himself year after year. And, the cost? zip, nada, zero. Why? Because Keith Christopher knows the value of service to one’s community.

If you could not make the 22nd annual Voodoo on the Bayou at the Pitot House this year you really missed a good one. But, its not too late to help out!

We’re All Alright

October 30, 2011 by Charlie London

Article, photos and video by Charlie London

Click on the photo above to see Cheap Trick perform at the 2011 Voodoo Experience

I must admit to feeling a bit out of place as I entered the Voodoo Experience around 6 pm on Sunday. Everyone around me seemed to be 18-25 years old and me, well, not so much.

I wandered about taking in the sights and sounds. I marveled at a ferris wheel at a music venue. I met some interesting characters and sensed that familiar smell we all know exists at rock concerts.

I began to feel more at home as I got closer to the stage I was seeking. The people began to look more like me… a little grey, a lot older, and indeed heavier.

These were the folks that used to be over-faired, long-haired, leaping gnomes but time and responsibilities transformed us into over-weight, short-haired, sleeping drones.

That all changed when Cheap Trick arrived on stage. You could feel the soul of a 17 year old leaping forth and the memories of good times giving everyone a “rush” not unlike the one they used to seek in their younger days.

Cheap Trick put on a fantastic show. One that transformed a bunch of old drones into leaping gnomes again. That was worth twice the price of admission!

Voodoo Parking

October 29, 2011 by Charlie London

The City of New Orleans has issued the following information on parking for the Voodoo Music Experience:

The City of New Orleans issued parking instructions and reminders in advance of the Voodoo Music Experience, to be held Friday, October 28 through Sunday, October 30, 2011, and which is expected to draw tens of thousands of attendees to City Park.

Event organizers have arranged for the following accommodations for parking:

· Parking is available for $20 per day at Delgado Community College in the parking lot at the corner of City Park Avenue and Marconi Drive. The lots will be open starting at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, and 9:00 a.m. on Sunday. Proceeds from parking will support Delgado student organizations.

· Parking is available inside City Park at designated areas for $15 per day at restricted locations, as directed by City Park officials. Attendees should be mindful that much of the park will be closed to vehicular traffic between Wisner Boulevard, City Park Avenue, Marconi Drive and Zachary Taylor Drive, adjacent to the I-610. Parking in City Park opens at 9:00 a.m. on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

· Parking is available along Marconi Drive and City Park Avenue as well.

Parking is NOT allowed on the neutral ground on Marconi Drive, nor is it allowed on the grounds that border Bayou St. John. The City will post extra signage along the bayou warning against parking on the perimeter of the waterway. If citizens choose to park on the street, pay close to attention to “No Parking” signs as the City will ticket and tow vehicles.

“We want to remind people to park in legal spaces and avoid unnecessary headaches,” said Deputy Mayor Cedric Grant. “We encourage people to be mindful of residents in the surrounding neighborhoods, and to be careful not to block driveways or park in other illegal spaces. It is the City’s intention to make every effort to keep people informed of where they can and cannot park, so they can enjoy all the great events New Orleans has to offer and not have their experience marred by receiving a parking ticket.”
