Every year in May, MotherShip Foundation brings 30,000 people to the banks of Bayou St. John for the Mid-City Bayou Boogaloo Music and Arts Festival. But have you ever wondered what MotherShip Foundation does after Bayou Boogaloo? Well, for the past year MotherShip has been establishing partnerships, securing sponsors, and raising over $30,000 to support its “Restore the Bayou Canopy Campaign.” With five new 200-gallon live oak trees planted along Bayou St. John earlier this year, the project has already exceeded its original goal of replacing the four live oaks that were damaged during Hurricanes Katrina and Isaac. And we’ve got more good news. This fall, MotherShip Foundation is investing another $11,000 to plant one 300-gallon live oak along with two massive 670-gallon live oaks. Yes, indeed!

On Nov. 14, 2013 from 7-10pm, MotherShip Foundation will host a fundraiser and auction benefitting the Restore the Bayou Canopy Campaign. The event will take place at Pearl Wine Co. in the American Can Building and will feature entertainment by local artists TBA. In addition to the musical entertainment, Marlin Miller—the artist who carved the public art sculpture out of the dead oak tree on the corner of Orleans Ave and Jeff Davis Pkwy—will also be at the event to share his story and auction off a few or his one-of-a-kind sculptures. Tickets, which include wine and food, are $50 for individuals or $75 per couple—with one hundred percent of the proceeds benefiting the Restore the Bayou Canopy Campaign. Following the fundraiser on Nov. 16, all are invited to witness and celebrate the major tree planting on Bayou St. John.

Below from Melinda Shelton

MotherShip founder Jared Zeller said the auction coincides with a benefit Nov. 14 from 7 to 10 p.m. at Pearl Wine, in the American Can Company, 3700 Orleans Ave. “Restore the Bayou Canopy” is an ongoing project to plant trees along Bayou St. John. The foundation, which sponsors the annual Bayou Boogaloo, has raised more than $30,000 to plant and maintain new trees.

Individual tickets for the Nov. 14 event are $50, and $75 for a couple. Trio Mollusc, with Ed Volker, Michael Skinkus and Joe Cabral, will play, and there will be food and beverages, Zeller said. Here’s the real deal: 100 percent of the proceeds go to the campaign.

Zeller said foundation and boogaloo supporters planted five oak trees last year, and on Nov. 16, they’ll plant one 300-gallon live oak and two 670-gallon oaks.

Spring Gala for Spay Mart

April 2, 2013 by Charlie London

kittyforwebSpayMart is holding its annual Spring Gala and Auction to benefit homeless cats on Saturday, April 6, from 6 to 10 p.m. “An Evening Along the Bayou” will raise a substantial percentage of SpayMart’s operating funds, which will allow the organization to continue providing low-cost spay/neuter and adoption services to the public.

The celebration at the home and gardens of Dr. Rollie Norris on Bayou St. John in New Orleans promises to be a fun-filled night set in near tropical surroundings with live music, martini bars, raffles, great food by local chefs, entertainment, live and silent auctions, and free photographs.

Tickets are $75 if ordered ahead of time, $100 at the door, and $750 for a reserved table for eight. You can order tickets at SpayMart or buy them at the SpayMart Thrift and Gift Shop in the Century Plaza Shopping Center at 6601 Veterans Blvd. in Metairie.

SpayMart was started by Lynn Chiche and Pam Casey in 1998 to to reduce pet overpopulation in the New Orleans area. Their mission has always been to address animal overpopulation and animal homelessness through education, aggressive spay/neuter, and adoption programs. The organization spay/neuters an average of 1,500 animals of indigent pet owners annually and adopts more than 400 cats to loving homes.

The non-profit group was getting ready to open the city’s first low-cost, high-volume spay/neuter clinic when Katrina hit, destroying the roof and ruining everything inside.

After the storm, Chiche focused her efforts on rescuing cats from the floodwaters. Her house in Metairie flooded, and she landed near Picayune, Miss., where she bought some property and turned a large building into a no-kill shelter for cats.

She and her husband live on the grounds, and she cares for more than 250 cats, most rescued from New Orleans and surrounding parishes. To learn more about SpayMart and to see cats available for adoption, visit SpayMart or call the shelter at 601.749.0268.

Although Holy Rosary Parish officially began in 1907, the history of the parish began as early as the settlement of Bayou St. John and City Park (Allard Plantation) area. The historic waterway, discovered by Iberville in 1699, served as a passage from the Gulf to Lake Pontchartrain. Soon the Spanish missionaries came to settle Louisiana. At the mouth of the Bayou, a resort called Spanish Fort was constructed.

Along the upper side of the Bayou was the Allard Plantation which, in the mid-1800’s became New Orleans City Park. On the opposite side, a number of fine homes were constructed as was the Fair Grounds. The present Holy Rosary property was originally part of a large tract of land that extended to Gentilly Boulevard. It was sold by Joseph Chalon and his wife, in 1871, to Don Andres Almonester y Roxas, the builder of the St. Louis Cathedral, who constructed a home for himself. Almonaster sold the land to Louis Blanc in 1792 and in 1799, it was acquired by Don Nicolas Maria Vidal, lieutenant governor of the Louisiana Colony. The land finally was purchased by Evariste Blanc and it remained in the Blanc and Denegre family until 1905.

Many fine homes were constructed in the area including the Spanish Custom House (now the residence of Vincent Saia), the Judge Tissot home and the Cucullu home. In 1855, Esplanade Avenue was opened to the Bayou on land obtained from the Blanc family. In 1856, St. Louis Cemetery was established on the site of the Old Bayou Cemetery originally founded by the City in 1835.

Soon after the Civil War, the Fair Grounds was established and the beautiful Gallier home became the Louisiana Jockey Club. A burial ground for Civil War soldiers was established by Governor Nicholls in 1883. In 1861, a horse-drawn car line was established with a car barn on Desmare playground next to the present Cabrini High School property.

As the area around Faubourg St. John and Grand Route St. John steadily developed, a call went out from residents for a parish church. The area originally was part of the distant St.Ann Parish but the distance was excessive for the residents to travel.

Mrs. Fanny Labatut Blanc offered a piece of ground in 1855 for the erection of a parish church, along with 300,00 bricks. The act of donation was passed in 1855 before Notary Octave de Armas. A small cottage on the property became the Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Father Maistre, the first pastor, deemed that the formation of the church was impractical and he went on to form St. Rose de Lima parish of which the parochial territory of Holy Rosary remained part of until 1907.

In 1904, Mother Frances Xavier Cabrini, who would later become America’s first canonized saint, trudged down the Esplanade looking for the ideal piece of land to construct an orphanage. In 1906, with the help of Captain Salvator Pizzati, Mother Cabrini constructed the Sacred Heart Orphanage. This project escalated the founding of Holy Rosary Parish. Also, the Denegre family was pressing the Archbishop to fulfill the commitment and construct a church as agreed, or else the land should revert back to the family.

In 1907, Archbishop Blenk took the long-awaited action and appointed Rev. William J. Vincent to build a new parish to be called Our Lady of the Holy Rosary. On December 25, 1907, the first mass was celebrated at midnight in the old home. According to newspaper accounts, Archbishop Blenk officiated at the mass. Mrs. Denegre did not live to see the final church building as she passed away on September 12, 1910 at the age of 93.

Although the first mass was celebrated in the home as Mrs. Denegre had wished, a small chapel was completed in January of 1908. As the new parish grew, a school was needed. While the chapel remained overloaded, especially during the period following the fire that destroyed St. Rose of Lima, other parish needs took precedence over the construction of a new church. It was not until 1924 that construction of the permanent church was begun. On Sunday, November 22, 1925, the new church was finally dedicated. Father Vincent died in November of 1934, having taken the parish from its humble beginnings to a fully developed congregation with a school, church, societies and a strong Parish spirit. It was found that Father Vincent had personally financed a modest part of the parish works.

Father Vincent was followed by Msgr. Francis Canon Racine and Bishop L. Abel Caillouet who contributed to the strong growth and parish spirit. Today, Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Parish remains a strong bastion of faith in the Archdiocese.

ABOUT CAFE DEGAS

FRENCH RESTAURANT OF THE YEAR – Best of Dining 2010
The masterpiece of proprietor Jacques Soulas, an artist and a restaurateur, and his friend Jerry Edgar, this creative bistro overlooking Fortier Park and romantic Esplanade Avenue is an authentic French jewel. The openness of the dining room, the intimacy of the bar, a live oak tree rising through the floor and a complete wine list adding pleasure to the French menu have guests looking up from their plates of moules et frites, checking the door to see when Hilaire Germain Edgar Degas will arrive. – T.M.- New Orleans Magazine December 2010

***
“Something about Café Degas makes dining there feel as if you’re on vacation. No other restaurant makes it so clear how our food culture is interwoven with France. Time seems to go by more slowly, so you may as well have another glass of wine”.
Tom Fitzmorris, Restaurant Writer, New Orleans City Business

***
“In business for 21 years, Cafe Degas has attained the status of a modern-day-neighborhood
institution. Its regulars have come to prize the place as equal parts romantic and practical,
upscale and comfortable” Gambit Weekly

***
“… Cafe Degas’ temperature-controlled, practically wall-free dining room allows diners to both experience and appreciate the weather during any month of the year …”
Gambit Weekly – 1st Place Best Outdoor Dining

***
“Charming European-style cafe with a delightful feel and creative bistro fare”
Zagat Survey of New Orleans Restaurants

***
The semi outdoors deck has tremendous appeal. The big oaks of Esplanade Avenue and the little park across the street make for a delightful and very New Orleans scene… The food here gets better every time I try it. You want to find out straightaway what the day’s specials are; they’re the best food Cafe Degas has to offer.
Tom Fitzmorris, New Orleans City Business

***
The service is “Impeccable and helpful. The waitstaff make you feel at home and don’t mind letting you in on their favorites”.
Jason McCann, CitySearch.com

***
A pecan tree shoots through a hole in the roof of the porch where we dine. On a windy day, tumbling nuts dance a jig on the tin roof; rain sounds like a concert for drums…. the food woos you…Whether you’re served by David Musson, a limb of the Degas family on his mama’s side, or Jacqueline Guiot, who speaks a curiously understandable French (even if you ne parle pas), the food woos you into a Degas mood. Pate de campagne, duck mousse pate, and creamy vichyssoise emerge from a kitchen the size of a kerchief. Carolanne Griffith-Roberts, Southern Living
