MAKE YOUR TAX DEDUCTIBLE GIFT WORK FOR YOU

December 18, 2015 by Charlie London

The Faubourg St. John Neighborhood Association is a 501c3 non-profit. Tax i.d. number… 74-2633439

So, money donated to FSJNA is tax deductible. FSJNA is raising funds to make Desmare Playground a better place for children and adults.

Make your money work for you and your neighborhood. Donate today!

FSJNA has $35,000 raised for Desmare Playground as of January 1, 2016

Let’s work together to make Desmare Playground a better place for everyone. Donate today!

RAISING FUNDS FOR DESMARE PLAYGROUND

The people of Faubourg St. John are always thinking of the neighborhood’s open spaces. From the Bayou to the bridges to the beautiful small parks that connect us, we proudly take a pro-active response to ownership and maintenance of these spaces. The people of Faubourg St. John want to be responsive to the needs of the neighborhood and our growing population of young families; refurbishing Desmare Playground at 3456 Esplanade is the current goal. It can’t be done without your generous support.

The goal of the Faubourg St. John Neighborhood Association (FSJNA) is to revamp the currently worn down playground and make it a more welcoming place for children with the addition of a swing-set (who ever heard of a playground with out swings?) along with a complete replacement of the playground equipment for children, refocusing the basketball court to be “little kid” friendly and re-purposing the space outside of the play equipment and ball field for family wellness as well as “kid-centric” neighborhood events. Bottom line, we want this playground to be a special place for children.

desmare-kids4webWorking with Landscape Architect Dana Brown & Associates (DBA) on the master plan, the Faubourg St. John Neighborhood Association involved the community in the playground planning process. On January 26, 2013 Desmare Playground held a kid’s charrette where neighborhood residents were invited out, with their children to have a chance to draw and express what they would like to see in the new playground redesign.

The event was a success with a number of families showing up and showcasing their creativity. With white boxes and sidewalk chalk the kids drew their playground ideas. These ideas ranged from swing sets to duck ponds. Especially swings!Desmare-depiction1

The new master plan was developed from the charrette input and keeps it simple providing a maximum play experience for the kids but with an eye towards easy maintenance, sustainability in design and solves the storm water management issues with a rain garden. The new features are extraordinary: Swings, new play structures for different age groups, a new exercise station for adults, more integrated circulation, overhead canopy, a new entry with benches and plantings, a tricycle track for younger kids to cycle around, a water fountain that is dog friendly, waste receptacles and a new bleacher area for the adjacent school softball fields. All new design features in the park are ADA accessible, including the aggregate paths.

The phases of development for the new Desmare Playground are designed to be implemented as the Faubourg St. John Neighborhood Association raises funds. Each phase of development can be constructed in pieces or as a whole.

Fund raising is the hard part; we have already raised funds and paid for the design work. Our plans are approved by the City of New Orleans. The thermometer below shows where we are so far. The first goal is to get those swings in!

FOLCAFFAIR

A NIGHT AT THE HEAD OF THE GREENWAY

Looking over the Greenway’s trailhead from the 4th story windows and balcony of Basin Street Station, long-time friends and new Greenway supporters came together to celebrate this groundbreaking year and envision the path that will soon stitch the city together. This month, Friends of Lafitte Corridor held its annual spring evening event, A FOLC Affair.

With a sell-out crowd and a terrific group of local sponsors, FOLC raised over $15,000! Over 90 people attended the Patron Party, showing their support by becoming FOLC members.

Councilmember Susan Guidry and former board member Edgar Chase spoke to the crowd of what the Greenway means to them. Dana Brown, Lafitte Greenway Project landscape architect, presented the Greenway’s green infrastructure plan, a beautiful design capable of treating water from a 10-year storm on-site.  We want to thank our members, supporters, and sponsors for making this event a major success!

HISTORIC COBBLES UNEARTHED

Towering mounds of dirt are piling up on the Greenway near North Claiborne, as environmental remediation is well underway. Turning dirt in this historic corridor, stones have been unearthed just inches below ground. The Department of Public Works assures us the contractor is salvaging all granite curbs and cobblestone, and delivering the material to DPW for future use.

2014-03-28 BASIN FINAL

BASIN PROGRAM WRAPS UP AT CRAIG ELEMENTARY

The heavy downpour and street flooding on March 28 provided the perfect backdrop to the final presentations by Mrs. Narcisse’s 5th graders at Craig Elementary who participated in BASIN (Building Active Stewardship in New Orleans). Learning how to live with, manage, and enjoy our watery environment were the big lessons for Craig Elementary students who participated in the 17-week environmental stewardship program piloted by Urban Conservancy in partnership with The Mission Continues, a fellowship program which engages post-9/11 veterans in service projects in their communities. Urban Conservancy’s Keely Hill and Mission Continues fellow Kendric Perkins (pictured here with students before the final program) developed and co-taught the program.

Urban Conservancy is exploring opportunities to expand the program to offer it to schools within the Lafitte Corridor. For more information, contact Dana Eness at dana@urbanconservancy.org or 504-232-7821.

ONE DAY ON EARTH: YOUR DAY. YOUR CITY. YOUR FUTURE.

85 percent of people across the U.S. live in our largest metro areas. One Day On Earth. Your Day. Your City. Your Future selected New Orleans as one of 11 cities across the country to highlight this fact through their documentary film event. The producers asked us and hundreds of other organizations around the country to pick up a camera on Saturday, April 26th and answer the questions: how is your city changing, and are you happy with the change? This video will be added to a geo-tagged video archive on yourdayyourcity.org and used in a TV Series. We will share the latest on the project as it progresses. Watch the trailer here.

carondelet-basin-mapA Contractor for Christmas: Lafitte Greenway Timeline

By Sophie Harris, FOLC Program Director, sharris@folc-nola.org

The city posted the Lafitte Greenway bid documents on November 7th. Contractors are preparing their bids for the December 10th bid opening date. If all goes well, the contractor will be selected in mid-December and start construction the last week of January, 2014. The public will have an opportunity to discuss the construction process with the contractor at a public meeting in January; this meeting is not yet scheduled. We expect to be out walking, biking, and riding the Greenway in February, 2015!

New Orleans’ Burgeoning Bicycle NetworkBy Sam Spencer, Friends of Lafitte Corridor Chair, chair@folc-nola.org
For the growing number of us who ride bikes in New Orleans, there is an extra item on our list of things to be thankful for this season: a dramatic expansion of the city’s network of bike lanes. For a city that had virtually no modern bike accommodations ten years ago, the fact that New Orleans will approach 80 miles of bikeways by the end of 2013 is a spectacular achievement, and one that bodes well for the long term sustainability and public health of our city.Upon completion of its initial buildout in 2015, the Lafitte greenway will become a critical piece of New Orleans’ burgeoning bicycle network, the backbone of our cycling skeleton. Read more.

2013 Urban Heroes: Greening New Orleans

By Dana Eness, Urban Conservancy Executive Director

The Urban Conservancy honored its 2013 Urban Heroes at the Propeller Incubator on Friday, November 22nd for their visionary leadership in developing innovative strategies to address New Orleans’ enviromental and economic challenges.  The evening included great local food and drinks, and live music provided by the Cajun-English indie band Sweet Crude.

David Waggonner of Waggonner & Ball Architects was recognized for helping New Orleanians to rethink their relationship with water, which has led to the development of the Greater New Orleans Urban Water Plan. Katrina Brees was recognized for her campaign to create a network of local vendors and manufacturers to provide locally made throws to carnival Krewes.  And Emelda Paul of the Faubourg Lafitte Tenants Assocation and Lafitte Greenway Steering Advisory Committee was recognized for her advocacy for the Lafitte Greenway and Corridor Revitalization plan.  In keeping with the “greening of New Orleans” theme, honorees each received a Where Ya Rack bicycle rack with a commemorative plaque to be installed at a location of their choosing.

Play Streets: New Orleans’ First Cyclovia!

By Annalisa Kelly, FOLC Community Engagement Chair, communications@folc-nola.org

On Saturday, Oct 26th, Friends of Lafitte Corridor joined local organizations for New Orleans’ first cyclovia, a pedestrian- and cycling-focused event in which streets are closed to cars, and neighborhoods reclaim the streets for traffic-less fun and games. The event, dubbed “Play Streets,” was organized by Bike Easy and brought together families, neighbors, cyclists, and pedestrians to engage in activities in the streets of Esplanade and Bayou Road between Claiborne and Broad.

Friends of Lafitte Corridor was one of several local organizations to join in on the fun. FOLC hosted “Greenway trivia,” quizzing participants on questions about green transportation, local New Orleans history, and the Greenway itself for free FOLC t-shirts, and partnered with local artist Ashlee Arceneaux, who drew a beautiful rendition of the Lafitte Greenway and invited participants to draw what they wanted to see on the Greenway.

We were most of all thrilled to share the upcoming news of construction and overall excitement about the Greenway with the neighborhood and participants. Thanks to all who came out!

Rails-With-Trails: A Safe Option for New OrleansBy Sophie Harris, Friends of Lafitte Corridor Program Director, sharris@folc-nola.orgThe portion of the Lafitte Greenway that will be constructed next year—Basin Street to North Alexander—is a rails-to-trails project, a conversion of a former rail corridor into a multi-use path. Ultimately, FOLC envisions a Greenway that extends past North Alexander to Canal Boulevard. The challenge is that the Canal Boulevard-North Alexander segment remains privately-owned active rail corridor. The Rails-to-Trails Conservancy recently released the America’s Rails-with-Trails Report. Rails-with trails projects are shared-use paths located on or directly adjacent to an active railroad or light-rail corridor. Surveying 88 trails in 33 states, the report finds that rails-with-trails are “safe, common, and growing.” There are 161 rails-with-trails in America, a 260% increase since 2000, and an additional 60 rail-with-trail projects are currently in development across the country. Out of the tens of thousands of fatalities on railroad corridors in recent decades, only one involved a trail user on a rail-with-trail. Read more.

All Things Local

By Sophie Harris, Friends of Lafitte Corridor Program Director, sharris@folc-nola.org

On Saturday November 9th, FOLC was pleased to appear with host Kevin Fitzwilliam on WGSO 990 AM’s All Things Local, a weekly radio hour focusing on New Orleans’ local economy, food system, artisans, and craftsmen.

The theme of the November 9th broadcast was sustainability. FOLC Chair Sam Spencer spent the entire hour with Kevin discussing the latest Lafitte Corridor news–the ongoing bid process and future groundbreaking, the potential of the Greenway to help restore the city’s tree canopy (along with Hike for KaTREEna President John Carriere), and the opportunity to retain stormwater on the Greenway. In case you missed this lively conversation, not to worry, you can still stream the podcast.

All Things Local airs every Saturday from 8-10AM on WGSO 990AM in New Orleans. For information about each week’s show, click the links above, visit their Facebook page, or email info@AllThingsLocalNOLA.info.

Get the Lead Out

November 10, 2012 by Charlie London

In 1991, Faubourg St. John neighbor Dr. Howard Mielke was interviewed about lead levels in the soil around residential homes. The City of New Orleans is testing public playgrounds and found high lead levels in Desmare Playground. The area is being remediated.
Dr. Howard Mielke is a professor of toxicology in the Department of Pharmacology, Tulane University School of Medicine.
Dr. Howard Mielke says, ” Young children are amazingly sensitive to lead exposure. Compared to yards and play areas around houses, parks are generally much safer places to play. Unsafe soil lead has been identified in 13 parks and most recently Desmare. Our city only has limited funds to do the interventions and given that limitation, identifying and intervening on Desmare is a major step forward. Intervention is being done on the area nearest Esplanade. The contaminated soil is probably a legacy from the use of lead additives in gasoline because the lead deposition is largest near the road and decreases rapidly with increasing distance from the road. This is a national problem that has not been vetted in the same way that air and water quality have been vetted (clean water and air acts). Desmare will be safer for children after the project is done. Acknowledging the problem is a major advancement for New Orleans and it puts our city on track for improving prospects for future citizens.”

According to the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry, “Exposure to lead can have a wide range of effects on a child’s development and behavior. Even when exposed to small amounts of lead levels, children may appear inattentive, hyperactive and irritable. Children with greater lead levels may also have problems with learning and reading, delayed growth and hearing loss. At high levels, lead can cause permanent brain damage and even death.” Please visit the links below for more information:
