chevroun-smithA man who opened fire at a crowded 7th Ward playground in 2012, killing a rival in the drug trade, was found guilty of murder Wednesday (Oct. 22).

An Orleans Parish jury convicted Chevroun Smith, 23, of second-degree murder for pumping nine rounds of a 9mm handgun into 32-year-old Ali Robinson at the Stallings Playground in the 2700 block of Laharpe Street, sending park goers running and children screaming. The jury voted 10-2 in favor of guilt after deliberating for about 90 minutes.

Prosecutors say Smith, a member of the 7th Ward gang known as Prieur and Columbus Boyz, or PCB, shot Robinson around 7:30 p.m. on April 13, 2012, in front of numerous witnesses. Invader Nabbed

September 22, 2014 by Charlie London

by Officer Frank B. Robertson, III
raymond_johnsonThe New Orleans Police Department has arrested 22-year-old Raymond Johnson for his involvement in a Home Invasion that occurred Monday, September 15,2014 around 9:55am, in the 600 block of South Hennessey Street.

According to the 39-year-old female victim, she was startled by a loud noise coming from the rear of her residence. The victim walked to the rear and was met by Johnson who she immediately recognized from the neighborhood. Johnson was standing in the rear of the victim’s home uninvited with several of her items in his hands. The victim approached Johnson and asked him to return her property and leave the residence when Johnson grabbed the victim around her neck and pushed her into a closet door. The victim struggled with Johnson for her property when he pulled a knife from his back pocket and stated “get out of my way and if you call the police I’m going to kill your daughter.” The victim stated she ended the struggle with Johnson to allow him to leave her home. Johnson was attempting to exit the home when he encountered the victim’s 48-year-old brother entering the residence. Johnson walked to the rear of the residence and then walked back to the front door when he and the victim’s brother became involved in a physical altercation. Johnson was able to break away from the struggle and flee the residence.

The victim and her brother followed Johnson to the intersection of South Pierce and Ulloa Street and attempted to detain him until police arrived. Johnson and the brother engaged in another physical altercation. Shortly after, Officer David Liang, who was working a Mid-City Security District detail arrived and attempted to place Johnson in handcuffs. Officer Liang and Johnson struggled for a brief moment until Johnson was able to break free from the officer and flee. Officer Liang called for assistance and responding officers arrived and set up a block by block perimeter search of Johnson. Johnson was later apprehended in the 4200 block of South Carrollton Avenue without any further incident.

Johnson was booked into Central Lockup and charged with one count of Home Invasion, two counts of Burglary, Possession of Stolen Goods, Resisting an Officer, and two outstanding warrants.

Who Steals a Kid’s Wagon?

November 1, 2013 by Charlie London

bounty-wagon-2013

The 2013 Bounty on the Bayou was a tremendous success except for one thing…

The owners of the distinctive wagon pictured at left (that’s the owners with the wagon) left the wagon for a minute on Vignaud Street while they went down the street to trick-or-treat with their kids. When they returned, the wagon was gone.

Now, there will be folks that will say… Why did you leave it? Why wasn’t it locked? ad nauseum.

It is great that the parents felt safe enough at our safe Halloween event to leave the wagon for a minute.

My question is, “Who steals a kid’s wagon?”

If by chance you saw someone with the wagon or saw it abandoned somewhere, please read below:

Hey guys,
As always, our family had a great time at Bounty on the Bayou. Early in the night, we parked our wagon on Vignaud near Grand Route so our hands would be free for trick or treating. Apparently, someone decided to “borrow” it. When we went back to the wagon to start the walk home, it was gone. The video on the website has a great picture of the wagon (green bottom, tan top, black handle) starting around 36 seconds in. If anyone happens to see the wagon, we would love to get it back. The kids were pretty upset about it. That wagon has a lot of Mardi Gras, Jazzfest and City Park trips on it. Again, we all had a great time last night, wagon or no wagon, and we look forward to Trick or Treating with y’all again next year.

UPDATE: Report from WWL-TV on January 25, 2013
Peggy Harmon was shocked to find her son’s Corvette on cinder blocks last week, stripped of it’s tires and rims. Thieves hit the car the night of January 16th or in the early morning hours of January 17th in front of her Lakeview home on Argonne Boulevard.

“The window of opportunity for them to do this was so small and we have such good lighting on this street, that it was a little surprising,” said Harmon.

Police believe several people must work together to quickly jack the car up, put it on cinder blocks and then take the tires. “If they can do it in a minute and half to two minutes, what chance do you have?” said Harmon.

A few houses over, a Cadillac had its wheels stolen just a few months ago. Burglars also hit a Tahoe on nearby Louis XIV Street last week. Now neighbors are taking extra precautions.

“I think we’ll probably leave our exterior lights on through the night,” said neighbor Jeanine Miller. Others are installing security cameras and tire locks. Police say that’s just a deterrent. Tire thieves have been targeting high end vehicles all over the metro area for months. It started with 20 inch rims on SUVs, but Harmon’s case shows, cars are becoming targets too.

“It’s a scary feeling because you wonder when are they going to graduate from cars to houses,” said Harmon. Harmon said it will cost thousands of dollars to replace her son’s tires and rims. For now, she’s just glad no one was hurt and she’s hoping for more patrols on the street.

8 cars found in Bayou St. John

March 15, 2013 by Charlie London

update – June 8, 2013 (from the New Orleans Police Department) – The black, two-door Honda Accord registered to missing Harvey school teacher Terrilynn Monnette, was pulled from the floor of Bayou St. John this afternoon. Human remains were found inside the vehicle.

A recovery diver, Slidell Police Officer Mark Michoud, who was one of many diving experts to volunteer his services in the search for Ms. Monnette’s car, located the vehicle in the bayou shortly after 12 noon. He returned to the surface and told others that the car’s description and license plate were a match.

The car was then carefully lifted out of the water shortly before 3pm. When they arrived at the scene, Coroner’s investigators decided to load the vehicle on a truck and relocate it to their office, where they removed the remains later today. The actual autopsy will be performed Monday morning.

26-year-old Terrilynn Monnette was reported missing on Saturday, March 2nd . She was last seen at about 5am that day with friends at Parlay’s Bar in the 800-block of Harrison Avenue. One should know that Steven Feakes fraud investigations are conducted and one can get help here.

“I’m sure these last few months for Ms. Monnette’s family have been the hardest in their lives. I cannot begin to imagine what this family has been through, and I commend them for keeping Terrilynn’s photos in the news and in the public’s memory”, said Superintendent Ronal Serpas.

“Now that Ms. Monnette’s car has been found, we begin the second phase of this investigation. Both homicide detectives and our fatality unit were on the scene today, so that they can pick up where our 3rd District officers have left off, and start finding out exactly how and why the car ended up where it did”.

Serpas continued, “I want to commend the 3rd District for their tireless efforts in this case, as well as our partners in the FBI and the US Secret Service. And I also want to thank the tremendous efforts of State Representative Austin Badon and the many volunteers who worked with him and the NOPD in this case. All involved with this team effort deserve recognition.”

State Representative Austin Badon said, “The discovery of Ms. Monnette’s car today was upsetting- not only to Terrilynn’s family members, but to many members of the New Orleans community. It was touching that many residents drove to the bayou when they heard the news that the vehicle had been located. Ms. Monnette’s story very obviously touched many of us.”

“I am aware that this investigation continues, but at this time, I’d like to thank local, state and federal law enforcement for the concentrated work they’ve put into Ms. Monnette’s case”, Badon said.

carinbayou2012feb19Equusearch, the Texas crew that New Orleans police have brought in to help search for missing teacher Terrilyn Monette, has found at least eight cars in Bayou St. John. But none of them is the teacher’s 2012 black Acura, last seen on March 2, Equusearch founder and director Tim Miller said Thursday.

“Waterways are good dumping grounds when somebody wants to get rid of a car for insurance reasons,” Miller said in trying to explain the fact that eight cars were found in the bayou.

The Equusearch crew, using 24-foot sonar boats that analyze sound waves to determine an underwater object’s size and shape, plans to send divers to check out a ninth car. That car has relatively few barnacles on it, indicating it may have landed in the bayou fairly recently, Miller said.
“We certainly don’t get too excited or get our hopes up until the divers come up and say there’s a chance,” Miller said.

Searchers have not found any signs of tire tracks in the land or mud surrounding various bodies of water between Parlay’s, the Lakeview bar in the 800 block of Harrison Avenue where Monette was last seen, and her apartment, Miller said.

U.S. Customs officials and State Police are using helicopters to conduct aerial searches of Lake Pontchartrain, said officer Hilal Williams, spokeswoman for the New Orleans Police Department.

Investigators have very few leads in the case, Miller said. “So far we’re at square one,” he said. “We’re no closer to finding her now than the first day, the day she disappeared.” But, he stressed, the search’s success could change in an instant. If authorities get a tip, he said, the crew will “drop everything and go to that spot.”

Police ask anyone with information on this missing person case, including the location of Monette’s 2012 black two-door Honda Accord, Louisiana license plate WUN494, to contact NOPD at 504.821.2222.

11 or 12 cars believed to be in the bayou
Updated: Mar 15, 2013 6:01 PM CDT
Written by: Nancy Parker | Fox 8 News

New Orleans, La. –
The owner of a Texas search company says he’s bringing in bigger sonar units on Sunday. EquuSearch is combing area waterways for a missing teacher.

Tim Miller of EquuSearch says the same equipment used in the Natalee Holloway investigation in Aruba will be brought here.

Now the company is moving its efforts to find Terrilynn Monette to the bridge by Robert E. Lee, looking for any sign of Monette’s black Honda.

So many cars are under the waters of the bayou, though, it’s making their job trickier.

“We have seen many cars under the water. They are not all in clusters. Some of them are older than others and actually on the sonar machine you can see barnacles growing off of them,” said Caitlyn Garey of EquuSearch.

Crews face challenges as they look for any sign of Terrilynn Monette or her car beneath miles of bayou. There are so many other vehicles under the water.

“I think we got 11 or 12 in there, all along the bayou,” said Tim Miller.

The search crew says the cars may have been stolen, left over from Katrina, or dumped for some other reason.

Technology called side scan sonar bounces sound waves off objects to create images. Miller says the sonar reacts differently to new cars that are freshly buried under water. T

Finding so many cars in the water can definitely slow a search. Every car must be tagged with a heavy magnet attached to a buoy. Divers follow the line to the magnet to find the car.

It is meticulous work for a crew that specializes in finding the lost loved ones of others. But beneath Bayou St. John, there are cars whose stories remain untold.
