NEW ORLEANS TO SAY GOODBYE TO ITS DAILY NEWSPAPER WITH A SEND-OFF & FUNDRAISER FOR SOON-TO-BE UNEMPLOYED TIMES-PICAYUNE STAFF

When: Saturday, Sept. 29, 6-9 p.m.,$30 general admission, free for T-P employees losing their jobs

Where: The Howlin’ Wolf, 907 South Peters St., New Orleans

What: New Orleans subscribers to the daily newspaper THE TIMES-PICAYUNE are already counting the days until the end of the newspaper’s daily publication on Sunday, Sept. 30. In true New Orleans style, they’re throwing “Black, White & Read All Over,” a party with great food and music to honor the writers, editors,designers, printers, newspaper carriers and other employees soon to be unemployed by the 175-year-old publication.

Sponsors include: Smith Stag LLC, Dan Shea & Stephanie Stokes, GNO Inc., Jason Patterson, Bernard Productions, Gambit, The Howlin’ Wolf and the restaurants and musicians listed below.

Food & Music
New Orleans eateries, including Galatoire’s, Ralph’s on the Park, Rio Mar Seafood, a Mano, Cafe Atchafalaya, Liberty’s Kitchen and Whole Foods Market Arabella Station are providing complimentary cuisine to the party goers in honor of The Times-Picayune staff. The Dave Torkanowsky All-Stars will be joined by musical guests Camile Baudoin,Matt Lemmler, Charmaine Neville Band, The Pfister Sisters, Martin Kruscheand John Rankin.

T-P7 Talents & Treasures
In addition, the T-P7 Talents & Treasures auction is offering a trove of one-of-a-kind items and experiences from celebrity New Orleanians and lovers of the city, including Anderson Cooper, Ellen DeGeneres and CNN’s Soledad O’Brien, along with current and former newspaper artists and photographers, and New Orleans businesses. Online bidding is now open at http://benefitevents.com/auctions/dashthirtydash/, with a live auction for several high-profile items to continue at the conclusion of the Sept. 29 event.

dash THIRTY dash, The Times-Picayune Employee Assistance Fund
The event is sponsored by dash THIRTY dash, a non-profit created by newspaper alumni and New Orleans civic activists to raise money for the hundreds of Times Picayune employees and contractors losing their jobs because of the changes. The paper’s plans to focus on its website and publish thrice weekly beginning Oct. 1 have prompted many locals to dub the paper The SomeTIMES-PICAYUNE.

Photography Exhibit at Cafe Degas

Faubourg St. John neighbor Eliot Kamenitz will be featured in a show of photographs at Cafe Degas beginning October 17th.

“At Random” will feature photos taken during his 40 years (and still counting) as a photographer.

Faubourg St. John Gets Jazzed

The FAUBOURG ST. JOHN NEIGHBORHOOD ASSOCIATION organized volunteers to clean up historic Desmare Park as part of a rotating effort that started in March to clean parks and provide neighbors with a chance to socialize. The group has cleaned up Fortier Park and Capdeville Park, too.

Bayou Cleanup June 16

Green It, a project of the YLC will co-host a Bayou St John clean up on June 16th from 9am-1pm. Neighbors and local businesses are invited to volunteer their time to paddle our way to a cleaner bayou.

Bayou Kayaks will supply kayaks in the water and volunteers are encouraged to paddle their own boats in the effort. The goal of the Bayou Clean-Up is to create a community effort to help beautify the area.

Prizes in three categories:
Largest group business
Largest independent group
Most trash collected by an individual
Weirdest thing pulled from the bayou

Local businesses are requested to donate prizes for the cause. If you’d like to volunteer, offer your support or donate prizes please email [email protected], subject Bayou Clean-Up. Don’t forget to include the name of your business, a list of volunteers, or what resources you’ll be supplying for the cause!

1883: Boy Breaks Arm Chasing Streetcar

On June 6, 1883, the Times Picayune reported the following:
“A boy named Albert Musgrove while running after a street car at the corner of Esplanade and Grand Route St. John, at 7 o’clock yesterday morning, fell and fractured his arm. Dr. Souchon attended the boy at his residence, No. 108 Grand Route St. John.”

Times Picayune Highlights Voodoo on the Bayou

Melinda Shelton writes, “The FSJNA’s 22nd annual fundraiser ‘Voodoo on the Bayou’ is Saturday at 8:30 p.m. at the Pitot House, 1440 Moss St. Proceeds from this year’s Halloween bash will go to renovations at Desmare Family Park and the Re-Bridge project.

Tickets are $40 in advance, $50 at the door, and can be bought at Terranova’s Superette or Swirl Wines on Esplanade, Cork & Bottle at the American Can Co. on Orleans Avenue, or New Orleans Bamboo on Magazine Street.

Wear a costume or festive attire for an evening of music by Los Po-Boy-Citos, and Lips and the Trips. Enjoy food from a host of local eateries, an open bar, and a silent auction.

Faubourg St. John Neighborhood Association is pleased to announce the 22nd Annual Voodoo on the Bayou celebration which will be held on the grounds of The Historic Pitot House.
The event will feature live music by “Los Po-Boy-Citos” (winners of the 2011 Big Easy Award for Best Latin Band) and the New Orleans sounds of “Lips & the Trips”.

Open Bar, food from some of New Orleans most beloved restaurants including Café Degas, Santa Fe, Nonna Mia and Angelo Brocato’s.

Also featured will be a wonderful variety of silent auction items including a Mignon Faget necklace, a Treme Poster signed by cast members, a Chris Owens costume, 1996 Sports Illustrated featuring and signed by Archie and Peyton Manning.
