For the past 24 years, the Faubourg St. John Neighborhood Association has produced one of its signature events, Voodoo on the Bayou. This year marks the 25th anniversary of Voodoo on the Bayou and will be held on the 25th of October, 2014.

The party is staged on the grounds of the historic Pitot House on the banks of scenic Bayou St. John. On Saturday, October 25th, the site will be transformed to accommodate the anticipated 400-plus costumed supporters of one of the city’s oldest neighborhoods. Nearly two dozen local restaurants will be charged with the task of feeding the revelers and not one, but two bands will be on tap to entertain.

First up on the stage will be the group Lips and the Trips followed by Walter “Wolfman” Washington who will close the night out.

The mostly local crowd will embrace the night’s theme with a colorful costume display that reflects the artistic flair that is characteristic of Faubourg St. John residents. In fact, much of the artwork up for bids in the silent auction will be provided by artists who live and work within the neighborhood.

Faubourg St. John was established as a neighborhood in 1708. Today, more than 4,000 residents call it home. Within the 75-block area that defines the area, you’ll discover a diverse selection of New Orleans restaurants, historic architecture, abundant green space, and an easy pace to enjoy local culture.

Walter “Wolfman” Washington became a local legend in the black clubs of New Orleans in the ’70s and ’80s and worked his way up to national status with a series of well-received albums and appearances.

His recording affiliations have likewise moved from local to national independent to major label. An innovative guitarist and fine singer who has also done some excellent work with vocalist Johnny Adams, Washington does not perform in the classic New Orleans R&B mold but incorporates soul, funk, jazz, and blues with fluency and power.

Washington was born and raised in New Orleans, where he performed in his mother’s church choir as a child. As he grew older, he fell in love with blues and R&B and learned how to play guitar. His first big break came in the form of a supporting role for vocalist Johnny Adams, working with the singer in the late ’50s. In the early ’60s, Washington became a member of Lee Dorsey’s touring band; after that engagement was through, he worked with Irma Thomas.

In the mid-’60s, Washington formed his own group, the All Fools Band, and began headlining at local New Orleans clubs. By the early ’70s, his popularity had grown enough to earn him a slot on a European package tour of New Orleans R&B acts. In the late ’70s, he toured Europe on his own with his new band, the Roadmasters.

Washington began his recording career relatively late, cutting his first album in 1981. The record, Rainin’ in My Heart, appeared on a small independent label called Help Me; it was later re-released on Maison de Soul. Four years after his debut, Washington landed a contract with Rounder Records, releasing Wolf Tracks in 1986. The guitarist recorded two more albums for Rounder — Out of the Dark (1988) and Wolf at the Door — before moving to the major-label Point Blank/Charisma in 1991. Throughout the ’90s, Washington continued to perform regularly, particularly in New Orleans clubs, and he recorded occasionally, yielding Blue Moon Risin’ in 1999 and On the Prowl a year later.

As you probably already know, this is the 25^th Anniversary of Voodoo on the Bayou!

Music, food, drinks, fun!

This year we will feature Walter “Wolfman” Washington and the ever popular Lips and the Trips. It will be held on Saturday night October 25th from 8:30-Midnight at the historic Pitot House on Bayou St. John. As always, we will have plenty of delicious food from about 20 of our favorite restaurants as well as an open bar with premium cocktails and a special Halloween craft cocktail! And a great silent auction!

We need your help! Tickets are $50 in advance and $60 the day of the event and can be bought at Pals, Terranova’s, Swirl or simply go to www.fsjna.org and click on the Pay Pal link at the top right hand corner. Easy!

This year all of the net proceeds from the event will go toward our ongoing project to renovate Desmare Playground. Please take a look at the attachment detailing the plans for the playground. Amazing! This is the only children’s park within our boundaries and we plan on making it the best that is can be!

SPECIAL THIS YEAR!

We know that many people cannot attend this event (LSU football, other parties etc.) but that does not mean that you can’t be a part of the TAX DEDUCTIBLE (FSJNA is a 501 (c) 3 organization—check with your accountant) effort to restore/renovate Desmare Playground!

This year we have created three special categories of donations—each level will receive 2 tickets to the event, along with the special Halloween craft cocktail (unlimited) and a chance to win a case of Mumm’s Napa champagne. The donor(s) will also be recognized on a Donors Board at the event. The levels available are:

$500—Desmare “Player”

$300—Desmare “Swinger”

$200—Desmare “Biker”
